Abstract: We describe an online ‘lifelong learning’ course on Control Engineering for graduates of any branch of Engineering or other scientific discipline. The course runs mostly asynchronously over 8 weeks, with the expectation that each student will devote 7-9 hours per week to it. This is a demanding requirement, since it is assumed that most learners are already in full-time employment. Initially, motivational material is presented in the form of examples of control systems and their benefits. Mathematical analysis is introduced only after a qualitative understanding of feedback has been established. Care has been taken to equip learners with both useful skills which they can apply immediately in their work, and with enough theoretical understanding to read specialist books and papers if they need them. The course covers PID controllers, ‘classical’ frequency-domain analysis and design methods, state-space methods and optimal control. More advanced material, including MPC, adaptive and robust control, is introduced very briefly. Students develop a working knowledge of Matlab and Simulink software during the course. The course is assessed by graded assignments based on a nonlinear model of an industrial process. The course runs 4 times per year; experience so far, after 8 runs, will be presented.

About the speaker: Prof Jan Maciejowski has worked in the space industry, but has spent most of his career as a researcher at Cambridge University, working mostly on multivariable control, model predictive control, and system identification. He has published two prize-winning graduate-level textbooks. He has been President of the Institute of Measurement and Control, and of the European Union Control Association. He is an Honorary Fellow of the InstMC, a Fellow of the IET, and a Life Fellow of the IEEE.
