Aman Singhal interned at Cambridge CARES this year, working with a PhD student on chemical testing.

I interned at Cambridge CARES during May to August 2019. The experience was very rewarding as I could implement my prior knowledge in SolidWorks and programming and also pick up new programming languages during my internship.

Being a mechanical engineering intern but focusing on the chemical industry helped me learn a lot about the processes and accuracy required to get the desired results.

I worked under Nick Jose, where I was tasked with programming and setting up a chemical testing station for the production of anti-bacterial paints. The project required implementation of valves, pumps, weighing scales and Arduinos. To enable a better user interface, I also designed a simple GUI in Python to interact with the operator.

I was also involved in making an autosampler for the above mentioned project using stepper motors and drivers. The parts were sourced from a few different websites and assembled in the well-equipped labs at CARES. The autosampler deposited chemicals in test tubes with high accuracy and this made testing the various parameters of the chemical very fast and effective.

In conclusion, I would like to thank CARES for the wonderful opportunity and support they provided during my internship. There are amazing projects ongoing here and everyone is more than eager to share their work with you. The work atmosphere is conducive to learning as everyone will try to support you if you are stuck in a dilemma. I wish to return here to work with the great people and projects they have to offer.
