Former CARES PhD student Dr Jacob Martin has received the prestigious 2021 Carbon Journal Thesis Prize. Jacob’s thesis, “Investigating the role of curvature on the formation and thermal transformations of soot”, was published in 2020 and supervised by Professor Markus Kraft.

Jacob completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge through the Cambridge-CARES Studentship Scheme, spending one year in Cambridge before moving to Singapore to complete his study. While at CARES, he researched flexoelectricity in carbon materials, the nanostructure of soot and the topology of disordered carbon materials.

The Carbon Journal Prize is awarded annually to a recent graduate in recognition of an outstanding PhD thesis in carbon material science and technology. This year, the prize was awarded to two researchers in recognition of the high calibre of submissions.

Jacob is now a Research Fellow at Curtin University in Perth, Australia where he is researching carbon nanotechnology.
