The CARES C4T Visiting Scientist Programme was launched in 2015 to provide an opportunity for distinguished members of the international research community to spend time collaborating with CARES researchers in Singapore.
We welcomed our first visitors since COVID-19 with Scott Elgersma and Subhajit Bhattacharjee, both PhD candidates at the University of Cambridge.
They were selected to be participants in the Global Young Scientist Summit (GYSS) in Singapore and spent time beforehand discussing their work with CARES researchers on MRI measurements in chemical reactors and solar-driven waste valorisation.
Scott Elgersma
The CARES C4T Visiting Scientist Programme was a fantastic opportunity to spend a week experiencing the world-leading research being conducted at CARES whilst also exploring all Singapore has to offer culturally. This great visit to CARES was followed by a week of attending GYSS.
I was fortunate enough to meet with multiple CARES researchers who toured me around their labs and discussed current and future research directions. The breadth and depth of the ongoing research activities at CARES were incredibly impressive. I was further able to share my research by giving a seminar organised by CARES, which was followed by an engaging Q&A session!
Scott delivering his talk on “Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as a tool for probing flow, chemistry, and molecular transport within chemical reactors” at CREATE.
GYSS was an incredible opportunity to meet young researchers from around the world, and hear from many eminent scientists, including numerous Nobel laureates. The entire experience was humbling but also inspiring.
I now return to Cambridge with an appreciation of the world-leading research in Singapore, and a fresh perspective on my own work thanks to the many great discussions that were had.
The C4T Visiting Scientist Programme was certainly one of the highlights of my entire PhD experience. I want to give a very big thank you to the entire CARES team, especially Olivia Lee and Elana McNaught, for making this visit possible.
Subhajit Bhattacharjee
The CARES C4T Visiting Scientist Programme gave me a unique opportunity to talk about my work on how new solar-driven technologies can pave the way for a sustainable circular economy. The programme helped me gain fresh perspectives on my own research as a PhD scholar, and I must thank the CARES organising team for the fantastic arrangements.
It was a great experience for me to interact with the wonderful people at CARES. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to the scientists at CREATE and NTU about their projects and touring their laboratories equipped with high-class research facilities.
Subhajit delivering his talk on “Sunlight driven circular economy for a sustainable future: (Photo)electrochemical systems and ‘artificial leaves’ for waste-to-fuel/chemical production” at CREATE.
In addition to the C4T Visiting Scientist Programme, I was also selected for GYSS 2023, where I had the chance to meet and interact with distinguished scientists, Nobel Laureates and exceptionally talented peers. The interdisciplinary nature of the Summit helped me gain fundamental insights into various technological innovations happening worldwide in different domains of science, and gave me an unparalleled learning experience.
