The event, intended to act as a showcase for UK science strengths and partnership, was attended by an audience of around 250 high level Singaporean, British and international VIPs and delegates followed by a private display for Prince Andrew the next day. CARES C4T staff, including Prof Markus Kraft (CARES Director), Prof Jan Maciejowski (PI, IRP4, University of Cambridge), Ms Joy Haughton (CARES Programme Manager), Janusz Sikorski (PhD student, IRP3, Cambridge-CARES *), Leonardus Kevin Aditya (Project Officer, IRP3, NTU) and Shaocong Zhang (Java Developer, IRP3, NTU) attended and Ms Mei Qi Lim, (Project Officer, IRP3, NTU) demonstrated the J-Park Simulator, the overarching flagship activity of CARES’ Carbon Reduction in Chemical Technologies (C4T) research programme.
The J-Park Simulator (JPS), an AI platform for scenario analysis in the chemical industries, industrial parks and networks, brings together for the first time cross-domain modelling and data storage with an ontology-based expert system to produce a next-generation tool for the design, analysis and operation optimisation of eco-industrial parks. JPS allows public sector agencies, industry and infrastructure providers to assess the full, multi-dimensional impact of different ‘what-if’ scenarios in real time. From the chemical processes to the electricity grid and from building management to molecular reactions, JPS provides clear, visual information to support optimisation, decision making and scenario analysis.
Prof Markus Kraft said the event was a great opportunity to showcase the interdisciplinary possibilities of the technology as well as best practice and science excellence between the UK and Singapore through the CARES collaboration on a complex and highly socially relevant topic.

C4T: The Cambridge Centre for Carbon Reduction in Chemical Technology (C4T) is the first interdisciplinary research group administered by CARES. Set up to tackle the environmentally relevant and complex problem of assessing and reducing the carbon footprint of the integrated petro-chemical plants and electrical network on Jurong Island in Singapore, the programme brings together researchers from Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Information Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Metallurgy.
*About the CARES-Cambridge studentship scheme: CARES offers PhD students with an attractive opportunity to experience the opportunities offered by both Singapore and Cambridge. Each student would be expected to spend approximately 1-2 years in Cambridge and 2 years in Singapore, some short trips back and forth within these blocks will be beneficial in encouraging research connections to grow. Unlike many other two-venue programmes, due to the frequent residence in Singapore by Cambridge academics as part of the CARES programme, continuity of supervision is achieved throughout. Cambridge-CARES funds the Singapore-based part of the programme. Other funding is sought to cover the first (Cambridge-based) year.
