The Cambridge Centre for Advanced Research and Education (CARES) continues to provide a collaborative platform for the University of Cambridge’s international outreach opportunities. The Gates Cambridge Trust recently planned outreach activities with CARES as part of its 25th anniversary, to celebrate the ripple effect of their Scholars in the world.

The trip to Singapore included a visit to CARES, two days of scholarship interviews in the CREATE building (where CARES is located), a lunch reception with alumni Scholar, Yeo Bee Yin [2009], and a series of meetings with alumni in Singapore. CARES worked closely with the Gates Cambridge team, providing knowledge and resources for their first visit to the Southeast Asian region.

The international visit celebrates the international nature of Gates Cambridge which has continuously supported outstanding applicants outside the UK to pursue their postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge. To date, there are currently 30 Gates Cambridge scholars from Singapore.

Our Malaysian community at CARES were excited to attend the lunch reception with Gates Cambridge alumni Scholar, Yeo Bee Yin, a well-known Malaysian politician. Some of them were even inspired by Yeo Bee Yin while they were studying. The gathering gave more evidence that the ripple effect of Gates Cambridge can occur in mysterious ways!

We are delighted that Gates Cambridge found common values and goals to align itself with our base in Singapore, and we welcome them in future to our wonderful city-state.

The Gates Cambridge Trust was established in October 2000 by a historic donation of US$210m from the Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge.
