Profile
Prof Joel AGER
Principal Investigator
Prof Joel Ager graduated from Harvard College in 1982 with an A.B in Chemistry and from the University of Colorado in 1986 with a PhD in Chemical Physics. After a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Heidelberg, he joined Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 1989.
Prof Ager is a Staff Scientist in the Materials Sciences Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and an Adjunct Professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department, UC Berkeley. He is a Principal Investigator in the Electronic Materials Program, Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP), and Berkeley Educational Alliance for Research in Singapore (BEARS).
Prof Ager was one of the Lead Principal Investigators for CARES' now-complete eCO2EP project, which ran from January 2018 - June 2021.

Research Interest
Dr Ager’s research interests include the fundamental electronic and transport characteristics of photovoltaic materials, development of new photoanodes and photocathodes based on abundant elements for solar fuels production, and the development of new oxide- and sulfide-based transparent conductors.
The Ager Research Group comprises of three intertwined themes:
- Materials and systems for solar to fuel conversion.
- Fundamentals of carrier transport in semiconductors and discovery of new phenomena;
- Discovery of new transparent conductors for photovoltaic and opto-electronic applications;
